The challenge: friction vs fraud

When it comes to verifying new users or authenticating returning logins, it’s easy to feel like keeping your platform secure and providing a seamless user experience are on opposite ends of a tug-of-war rope. Introducing friction such as two-factor authentication, liveness checks, or identity document reviews can help keep risky users off your platform, but can also increase costs and user abandonment.

There’s a time and place for these step-up authentication methods, but they aren’t a good fit for every user every time. In fact, most of your users are legitimate, and shouldn’t require intensive verification methods.

On the other hand, not protecting your platform with an accurate verification and authentication solution opens your users up to account takeover, fraudulent platform activity, and trust & safety issues.

Incognia’s solution

Incognia’s Location Identity Verification solution analyzes online activity in combination with real-world location signals, allowing platforms to verify new users, authenticate returning logins, and verify addresses in real-time, with no user action required.

How our customers use Location Identity Verification

Verifying new users

Incognia’s location verification is a highly accurate and completely frictionless form of user verification. We recommend that our customers verify all their users with location by default, and that they only resort to more costly and user-intensive verification methods in suspicious cases.

Since our solution is able to automatically verify an average of 71% of users, it enables huge reductions in user friction and in MFA costs. It empowers our customers to stop treating their good users like potential criminals.

Authenticating returning logins

Our customers also leverage location verification to streamline their login processes. Alongside an existing user’s device ID, Incognia also maintains information about the locations from which the user frequently accesses the app, such as their home, workplace, or school. We call these trusted locations. When a user is at one of their trusted locations, they can log in automatically. However, login attempts far from a trusted location–or at a location previously identified as risky–prompt additional authentication to ensure account security.

Address verification

Incognia’s Location Identity Verification solution is also a powerful way for our customers to verify addresses provided by their users. We combine multiple signals like GPS, WiFi, and Bluetooth to determine the user’s precise location and compare it to the provided address. This tamper-resistant approach is much more accurate than traditional address verification solutions that rely on limited and outdated postal databases.

Listing verification

Online marketplaces and platforms leverage Incognia’s solution to validate the authenticity and accuracy of their listings. We help prevent fake or misleading listings and protect users from fraud. Listing verification is vital across platforms for e-commerce, real estate, vacation rentals, and food delivery, as well as job boards.
